Organic Gardening

Hot Tip! Learn to exchange your ideas and information with like-minded people who can show an equal passion for gardening.

Think of the earlier days when chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides were not invented and people used to grow cereals and pulses, fruits and vegetables, flowers and seedlings using fertilizers from natural waste products. They were dependant on home made pesticides instead of chemical pest removers. The produces looked better, tasted better and were absolutely harmless.

Well, people have come to appreciate today the practice the earlier generation accomplished so well and regenerate the system for their own benefit. In short, the method involves no inorganic substances to be used in planting, nutrition or growth of plants and trees. Fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and supplements are all obtained only from nature. When this technique is applied to gardening, it is called Organic Gardening that is gaining popularity pretty fast and the produces thus obtained are termed Organic Food.

Hot Tip! Besides having a love for gardening you should also have the will and determination to pursue your hobby.

Though Organic Food is also available at most supermarkets, people prefer to grow them on their own for the extra satisfaction that no adulteration has taken place and the produces are genuinely ‘home grown’.

The organic movement has gained momentum and has now become a national hobby that is as interesting as it is productive. However, pests are pests and they are merciless when attacking plants and herbs in an organic garden. But there are ways to get rid of them in a natural way. One simple method is to plant marigolds near the vegetable patch; another is to make a concoction of cooking oil, dish washing soap and water and spray the mixture to remove the pests.

Nor is the subject of natural fertilizers ignored. Merely using kitchen and garden waste materials that may contain potato and other vegetable peelings with a touch of rose prunings to improve the texture has solved the mysterious way of compost making. Coffee grounds add an agreeable smell to the blend. This also does away about disposing all that waste products. But make sure that everything is dry.

If you are interested to know how the organic garden lovers insulate and enrich the soil, I may till you now. It is a simple matter composed of pine needles and grass clippings gently spread over the ground right under the plant. Ingenious, isn’t it?

By the way, parents of young children are worried about the chemicals that usually find their way in our food production and sometimes these chemicals get into the waterways, causing unknown damages to the human system. However, organic gardens are free from such hazardous chemicals and your kids and the dog, already a family member, can play there safely since it is a natural chemical free zone.

Hot Tip! Don’t over do it~ one or two hours of gardening is plenty, especially when you are beginning! 2. Don’t lift objects that are too heavy for you.

People indulge in organic gardening not only to obtain the product but also for their own mental satisfaction. Any creative work, big or small, always has its reward. Lovers of organic gardening derive immense pleasure in planting, pruning, enriching and taking care of their garden. And this taking care also becomes a part of the entire family as others are encouraged to take active part in the organic garden. They learn that it is important to identify with nature to survive and flourish.

Hot Tip! Environmental Stewardship. Gardening organically means that the environment benefits from the reduction in contamination of the water supply and air pollution.

How To Choose Quality Tile For Creative Bathroom Designs

Hot Tip! Paint Light colors in cool shades work best in a small bathroom. It will give the room an airy feel and create an optical illusion.

Nothing says “bathroom” like bright tiles in creative designs. While many have opted for cheap fixes like synthetic shower enclosures and linoleum floors or even carpet pieces, the traditional look of tile has the potential to make a bathroom stand out like none other. Tiles come in three main styles: harlequin pattern, natural stone with marble accents, and traditional tiles with color and pattern splashed throughout them.

The harlequin pattern distinguishes itself from the other styles simply by the diamond tile placement instead of the traditional square placement. This particular style appeals to me for several reasons, for one, it’s different. It distinguishes the bathroom as a canvas of creativity instead of just another place where a person has to spend time daily. The variety of colors and patterns available give a person endless options for expressing their personal tastes and interests.

Like I said before, I really prefer the harlequin style. And in fact, I most prefer this style in simple, stark black and white tiles. Precisely placed, black and white tiles with chrome accents throughout the bathroom have the potential to make this particular room stand out. No longer do you have to walk into a dull, beige room, but you have the classy look of a dichromatic style with shiny touches. Be aware, however, that if you indeed prefer this look, you’re going to be spending some time polishing. The shiny harlequin tiles in black and white and the chrome finishes easily show both water spots and finger prints. So if you don’t prefer spending lots of time polishing, you may want to consider other styles of tiles.

Hot Tip! Wallpaper Wallpaper can add a nice touch to a bathroom but you need to make sure you keep the patterns nice and small especially in a small room. Borders are a great way to give the illusion of larger and there are some great ones to choose from.

The stone tile works best for those who despise water spots. These natural tiles have a matte finish that does not reveal water spots or finger prints. Additionally, the traditional look of brushed stainless steel accents lends itself to a cleanable bathroom because it too does not show water spots or finger prints easily. Those who have a bigger budget can consider the classy look of marble fixtures that blend in well with their natural stone tile.

Many times priced by the piece, tiles can cost a bundle. And so if you’re working on a more modest budget, you’ll want to move right past the harlequin and natural stone tiles, and instead focus on the traditional tiles. You can still make your bathroom reflect your personal tastes thanks to the vast variety of colors and patterns available in these tiles.

Hot Tip! People with a wide variety of physical and mental impairments may require some modification of the bathroom to improve safe access to the toilet. Bathrooms should be modified to compensate for the person’s altered mobility.

Remember that once you have your style chosen, you should have a professional install your tiles. Sure, we’d all love to save a buck or two, but in the end, you’ll appreciate the professional finish that only a trained mason can create.

So expand your mind to the world of tiles, and consider the possibilities.

The Hunt for Vintage Kitchen Sinks

Kane’s Kitchen Cookbook. Secret recipes from a grandmother to your home.

Want to relive the excitement of California’s gold rush of the mid 19th century? Or the grandeur of the Victorian age? If your answer is a ‘Yes’, try installing an antique sink in your kitchen and mull over the glorious past of your ancestors while eating your meal.

Obtaining a real antique or vintage kitchen sink is not going to be easy. The kitchen sink from the pages of the history book is likely to have developed cracks or chinks and the one you are lucky to chance upon may not have the necessary accessories like faucets to make it workable in today’s kitchen.

The kitchen sinks of the mid 19th or early 20th century were made of marble, porcelain, fireclay or copper. They mostly came from Continental Europe - France and Italy.

Kitchen sinks from the early 20th century are quite difficult to find in useable original condition. This helps drive the price up.

Hot Tip! Write down your plan, and use it to guide you. It is important to sketch out what you want your new kitchen to look like, including the countertops, the stove, the dining island, etc.

To take one example, a classic 1900 model of marble sink, manufactured in Chicago by the Wolff Mfg. Co, which the Los Angeles-based Vintage Plumbing has put up for sale, has a 4′ tall heavy French plate beveled mirror back splash. It has full original mixer hardware and complete supply and drain hardware below sink. It has nickel plated brass cabriole legs and carved soap dish in the slab drains into the basin. The store has priced it at $8,900.

According to the Vintage Plumbing, kitchen sinks from the teens, 20’s and 30’s are very popular among the customers and so they have a fairly good stock of them. The store stocks antique farm house kitchen sinks manufactured by the Kohler’s, Standard Sanitary Mfg Co, besides the Wolff Mfg. Co. However, the store admits it is difficult to find sinks in good condition.

Some Tips To Help You Organize A Tiny Bathroom

Hot Tip! If you are using a white or cream ceramic tile for your bathroom, using a different color grout like ‘blue’ will give your bathroom a more dramatic look.

1f9b

No one wants a small bathroom. Those with large bathrooms indulge in them, and those with small bathrooms, bang their elbows, curse excessively, and dream of fat tubs with lots of bubbles and ample floor space. Though we might dream of big bathrooms, the truth of the matter is that sometimes we just can’t afford a john the size of our bedroom, especially if you’re renting an apartment. After all, beggers can’t be choosers, and if we have to choose between feeding our families and expanding our bathrooms, the pitiful eyes at the supper table will always win out. So how does a person make the most of his teeny, tiny bathroom while avoiding bruised appendages and filthy slang?

Hot Tip! Country Bathroom Think warm, cozy, and inviting. Choose earth colors and pastels for your countertop.

First of all, consider how to get rid of the clutter or to hide it in the bathrooms. Some not so clever bathroom designers at one time thought they could maximize a small bathroom’s usage by including a closet near the bathroom for extra space. Unfortunately, many individuals find these to be adequate storage but poor in their placement as they have to walk out of the bathroom to get whatever makeup, hair gel, or shaver they might need.

To maximize your space, consider some of the great space savers that exist today. At the top of the list is the medicine cabinet. This isn’t a new idea, but it works great to keep unwanted clutter off the sink. Try to find a recessed one. This will give you even more space and lessen the chances of you nailing your shoulder on it and knocking it off the wall every time you turn around. A medicine cabinet has the potential to literally wipe your vanity clean of the makeup, combs, brushes, and other accessories that we deem necessary for daily survival.

Hot Tip! Have a detailed inspection of your bathroom done before you start. It is a good idea to have a plumber inspect your current bathroom for leaks and other problems.

Above the toilet storage units can save you a real headache as well. If you’ve got the wall space, look for the cabinets with long legs that straddle the toilet and hold up either shelves, cabinets, or both. Again, these little devices have the potential to make your bathroom clutter free.

If little hands and feet also use your bathroom and like to clutter it up with their floating boats and rubber duckies, purchase a small plastic bin for each child’s clutter. Then make sure that the clutter goes with the child and does not stay in the bathroom. You can put their shampoo, conditioner, and toys in it to keep their goodies out of the bathroom when they are not using them.

Hot Tip! Find a reliable contractor. For most people, remodeling the bathroom is not a do it yourself project.

Small bathrooms are a reality, and we shouldn’t make them the Bain of our existence. Instead, we just need to reevaluate how we can best utilize the space and count our blessings in the process. After all, the less bathroom you have, the less bathroom you must clean.
